Many food storage containers are made of plastic. They are considered as practical and easy use. However, as now people are more aware of their health, they become wondering whether plastic food containers are safe or not.
Well, actually you can still use them but with some points to consider. You know, there are some types of plastic. Not all of them can be used as food storage especially storing hot or cooked food. Some of them contain toxins that can harm your body especially your kids. There are, therefore, some tips to use plastic storage so you can keep the food safe.
The most important thing is that you have to pick containers marked with “PP” or “LDPE” which means Polypropylene containers. These containers don’t leach chemicals into the food. You can see these marks inside the containers. Some containers are marked on the bottom. These containers are labeled with number 4 or 5.
Plastic food storage containers labeled with number 1 refer to those made polyethylene terephthalate. These containers can be used to store liquid such as soda, milk, purees, water, and the like.
After you use the containers to store the liquid, you should wash them with soapy hot water so they can be used again. But, if they get damaged, for example they become cracked or cloudy, you must recycle them.
The most important thing is that you should make sure the containers are BPA free. Based on some research, BPA is a harmful substance that can cause health problems.
Do not heat or even cook food in plastic food storage containers because extreme heat can leach harmful chemicals into the food. Although some plastic containers are claimed by the manufactures as oven or microwave safe, you are no recommended to put the containers in the oven or microwave.
If you want to put cooked foods in the storage, make sure you let them cool first. So, it can be concluded that plastic containers are safe to store food as long they are BPA free and used only to store cool foods. Don’t ever put them in the microwave or oven. In addition, don’t use them if they get damaged.
If you use the containers properly, it is fine to use plastic containers. It is actually much better if you pick other alter natives such as Pyrex containers or glass containers. Although they are more expensive, they can be used to reheat food in the microwave.
